Stijn Bussels

Stijn Bussels is assistant professor at the Leiden University Centre for the Arts in Society (LUCAS). There, he leads the ERC program ‘Elevated Minds’. The program consists of two postdoc and three PhD projects that  start from Longinus’ treatise Peri hupsous in order to clarify the effect of awe and wonder in early modern theatre and architecture in seventeenth-century Paris and Amsterdam. Stijn has published widely on theatre and spectacle in the early modern Netherlands. He published a monograph on the Entry of Charles V and Philip into Antwerp (Rodopi, 2012). He also worked on ancient theories on living presence and art’s agency. This resulted in his monograph ‘The Animated Image. Roman Theories on Vividness, Naturalism and Divine Power’ (Akademie Verlag, 2012).
